Bringing in the cash

So, I’m a sofa worker, I think we’ve got that settled, but what do I do you may be asking. Oh, you aren’t asking, but I’m going to tell you anyway.

My main work is building or maintaining web sites. I’ve been working in the internet industry since about the year 2000 after getting bored of engineering. The web sites I work on can be small sites or large scale, database driven sites. I think of myself as a jack of all trades, master of none when it comes to my skillset, although I like to think I have reached a pretty competent level in the main skills I use which is HTML, PHP, ASP, CSS, SQL, Flash, Photoshop and a few other bits and pieces.

I also run a couple of web sites myself including a forum for Konica Minolta or Sony DSLR owners, a site all about the basics of photography, a general blog and a couple of other small sites for experimenting with at a later date. None of which are bringing in anything other than a couple of dollars a month.

Working for myself and at home has given me the chance to do other things too. I’ve taught evening classes in photography, web design and photoshop, I can explore my hobby of photography more and I a few other thing that working a 9-5 job wouldn’t allow me to do.

I’m also writing some software for a friends business, and designing a product that could be popular in a certain niche. More on that later, when there’s more to tell.

However, at the moment my days are mainly spent in front of my laptop, looking at and trying to change code to meet my client’s requirements.

Sofa Worker lives

My first post on this blog.

I thought long and hard about how to make this a ground breaking first post, attracting readers from far and wide, making people think, stopping traffic in the street (not sure how) and generally astounding everyone.

Unfortunately I ended up writing this. I think I saw a car slow down about while I was writing it though.

Welcome to the blog anyway.

Working from home is a major step for anyone to take. Some people take to it like a duck to a wok, other people need a bit of a helping hand. Fortunately I fall into the duck and wok category and have never looked back since making that jump in September 2005. I’ve had ups and downs along the way, made mistakes, made good choices, but it’s been the best decision I’ve made so far.

Anyway, if you are in a similar position, or just thinking abut it, let me know, share your thoughts and hopefully you’ll find something useful in my brain to help you along the way.
